Jacob Shaw appointed Professor of Cello at Royal Northern College of Music

Jacob Shaw, founder and director of Scandinavian Cello School has been appointed Professor of Cello at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), in Manchester, UK.

He said about the appointment:

I grew up “cellistically” in awe of the RNCM and many of their former cello professors such as Ralph Kirshbaum, Karine Georgian & Raphael Sommer, alongside of course the great Manchester Cello Festival that brought the worlds biggest cello stars to the institution. The RNCM has a rich history of nurturing some of the most talented musicians in the world and time and time again I’ve met alumni in the profession who have raved about their experiences studying there.

The journey to a professorship hasn’t been without its challenges. Those who know me well are aware that I’ve spent years searching for a place to nurture a full-time class – a place that not only aligns with my values, but also offers students a supportive and enriching environment for musical growth.

I searched long and hard for an institution which I believe shares my ethos – to give the my students careful support and chances in a wonderful and encouraging atmosphere. Over several visits to Manchester I have had more than a gut feeling that the place for that full time class is the RNCM, and this is truly an incredible opportunity to contribute to a legacy that spans decades of excellence in music education and performance.

This appointment represents more than a personal achievement; it’s a sign that waiting to find the right fit was absolutely worth it.

I am profoundly grateful to the Royal Northern College of Music and those involved in my appointment for embracing my vision and entrusting me with this incredible opportunity. I simply cannot wait to get started!!
